DATSUN GO NAMED AS SOUTH AFRICA’S MOST AFFORDABLE CAR FOR SECOND YEAR IN A ROW



The Datsun GO has taken the 2016 Kinsey Report accolade as the country’s most affordable car - making it the second time in a row that Datsun has led the rankings as the car that is the most economical to maintain in South Africa. By scooping the field in 2015 and 2016 in the authoritative and comprehensive survey, the Datsun GO has fulfilled the promise Datsun made to bring quality, affordable motoring to South Africa’s competitive A-segment, said Des Fenner, General Manager of Datsun South Africa of the GO’s major achievement. During its two years in South Africa, the Datsun GO has made an indelible impression on the entry-level vehicle segment. The GO has not only helped motorists to contain motoring costs at a time when there are massive budget pressures on most households, but has also enabled many South Africans to enter the new car market for the first time. This has brought independence from public transport schedules to many and provided them with the personal mobility that has enabled buyers to find and access new opportunities within the economy.”

The Kinsey Report, which is regarded as the most comprehensive survey on everyday motoring, covers vehicles available locally.


The categories used to rate cars in their defined market segments are:


Category A (Service Items): covering everyday replaceable items, such as air filters, spark/glow plugs, brake pads/shoes and wiper blades.


Category B (Repair Parts): covering major items, such as cam belts, shock absorbers, clutch and pressure plates, flywheels, and fan belts.


Category C (Crash Parts): this looks at major replacement body costs, such as bonnets, grilles, doors, fenders and bumper skins, and light assemblies.


This year, categories were applied to a total of 69 vehicles across nine motoring segments (all costs monitored included VAT). Within the ‘city car and entry car level’ category 11 vehicles were appraised.


When all costs listed were taken into account in the category, the ‘tale of the motoring tape’ revealed that:

  • The total for the Datsun GO cost basket was R43,193.
  • The second most affordable competitor was the Nissan Micra - at R55,071.
  • The most expensive vehicle in the category came in at R75,338.
